The National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg has issued a
* Flash Flood Warning for... Henderson County in western North Carolina... Polk County in western North Carolina... Eastern Transylvania County in western North Carolina...
* Until 515 AM EDT.
* At 1116 PM EDT, Earlier today, a prolonged period of steady rainfall produced 3-6 inches across eastern Transylvania, Henderson, and Polk counties, saturating area soils and causing scattered areas of nuisance flooding. Doppler radar shows several rounds of torrential rainfall has moved through the area from the south, capable of producing 2-3 inches of rainfall on top of saturated soils. This rainfall will exacerbate areas of ongoing nuisance flooding and cause new areas of Minor flooding to develop.
* Areas of greatest concern include along the Little River from Cedar Mountain to Penrose; the Davidson River near Pisgah Forest; the French Broad River from Brevard to Mills River; Mud Creek from Crab Creek to Hendersonville to Mountain Home; White Oak Creek from Mill Spring to Green Creek; and Boylston Creek near Forge Mountain.
* Additional areas of Minor Flooding are expected to develop over the next 1-3 hours. Please obey all barricades and heed all evacuation orders from local Emergency Management officials. Only a few inches of water can strand your vehicle and only 6 inches of water can sweep your vehicle away.
- Hazard
- Flash flooding caused by thunderstorms.
- Source
- Radar indicated.
- Impact
- Expect flash flooding of low-lying areas near streams, including parks, trails, low-water crossings, boat- access areas, and campgrounds. Significant flooding of poor-drainage areas are likely, impacting travel. Low-lying roadways are likely to be flooded, requiring barricades. An isolated landslide or two cannot be ruled out.
* Some locations that may experience flash flooding include... Hendersonville, Brevard, Columbus, Mills River, Fletcher, Flat Rock, Etowah, Mountain Home, Laurel Park and Tryon.
What to do
Be especially cautious at night when it is harder to recognize the dangers of flooding.
Be aware of your surroundings and do not drive on flooded roads.
The additional heavy rain will increase the risk of landslides and debris flows, especially in areas where landslides have occurred in the past. Be especially alert if you live near a stream, particularly at the base of a mountain or in a cove. Watch for signs that a landslide may be imminent, including loose-moving soil and rocks or a sudden increase in streamflow. Stay indoors and do NOT go outside to investigate. Escape vertically inside your home by moving upstairs or getting on top of counters to avoid being swept away.
Places under it Hendersonville, Fletcher, Brevard, Etowah, Mills River, East Flat Rock, Dana, Flat Rock, Mountain Home, Horse Shoe, Laurel Park, Fruitland, and 8 more
