Live/Radar/Sky cover

Forecast sky cover map

How much of the sky cloud will cover, in percent, hour by hour. Clear sky is the map itself; the thicker the cloud, the brighter it is drawn. Played, the cloud decks drift across the country. A frame every 3 hours to 3 days, then every 6 hours to 7 days, played from now as a loop of 1 to 7 days. More on this picture, and every picture the map shows.

The map

Storms now

Every storm the radars are tracking, the strongest first: hail, rotation, how high it reaches and where it is heading. Each is on the map above: a dot, or a ring for a strong or severe storm with a line to where it will be in an hour.

416 storms tracked: 0 severe, 1 rotating, 1 likely to hail. Listed: the strongest near a town, 30 at most; every storm is on the map.

The radar ranks each spin it finds inside a storm from 1 to 25: 5 and over is a rotating storm, the kind that can bring large hail and tornadoes; under 5 is a weak spin. A tornado signature is a tight spin near the ground, where a tornado may be forming or on the ground. Every picture

Seven pictures of the same storms. The radar shows where rain and snow are now; the tops, how tall the storms stand; the rate, how hard it falls; the totals, how much has come down.

How the pictures are made

Every radar in the national network sweeps the sky every few minutes. The sweeps are joined into one picture of the country on a grid about a third of a mile across, and from the same sweeps the rain falling now, and the rain that has fallen, are worked out. Storm Station draws each picture in its own colours, in the browser, at every zoom, so the map stays sharp as it is enlarged.

The forecast maps are drawn from the national blend of the forecast models: the models joined into one forecast and corrected against what each place has measured, on a grid 1.6 miles across, the forecast the country’s forecasters start from. Each of its main runs, four a day, is read whole, laid onto the same grid of latitude and longitude as the radar at 2.8 miles a cell, and played forward hour by hour.

The same pictures, as tiles: /radar/now.json gives the times of the latest frames, /radar/now.json?show=p24h those of a total, and /radar/now.json?show=ft those of the forecast.
